Peterborough Younger Walkers Annual Report
November 2013 – October 2014

Well another year gone and more countryside walked, explored and enjoyed! Membership is still up around the 65 mark and we often entice walkers from other Groups and occasional viewers of our website out to join us.

Once again Easter was enjoyed away, this time up in the wilds of Northumberland (see website article for full gory details) and the weather couldn’t have been better. We even strayed over the border into Scotland on our big Cheviot day! As for the beach walking there was so much of it and many dipped their toes in the North Sea.

The other big weekends away were to Yorkshire (centred on Helmsley), the Lincolnshire coast (based near Skegness, yes really) and the Brecon Beacons (based outside Brecon). Apparently camping wasn’t luxurious enough for some on the Lincolnshire weekend and caravans appeared! All were enjoyed immensely.

There was a variety to the usual fortnightly Sunday walks with new routes including Woolsthorpe, Wimpole Estate, Tealby, Central London and even Hampton to Peterborough city centre! Mixed in with these were a challenging 17 miler from Stamford to Oakham down to a 5 mile afternoon stroll from Alwalton around Ferry Meadows preceded by Sunday lunch. Let’s hope for some interesting new routes in 2015.

We also enjoyed the usual summer season of weekday evening walks in and around Peterborough with some fine pubs at the end.

Social events continued to be popular with favourites old and new including the Tolethorpe plays, beer fest (this year at Bourne), the Christmas meal, greyhound racing and the annual BBQ being joined by racing at Newmarket. We even carried out some voluntary work path clearing at Peakirk!

On the sporting front this year’s Croquet tournament was won by Dean and Kate and the crazy golf at Hunstanton was jointly won by Claire M-R and Jane P. The Quizzy Rascals had an impressive first half of the year winning on many an occasion but have been missing action recently after the regularly attended quiz sadly ceased running.

So what does 2015 hold? Well plans for an Easter trip to Ireland are underway with the prospect of other trips to the Cotswolds and Somerset. Another wine tasting evening would be most acceptable as well (social committee?)
