Peterborough Younger Walkers Annual Report
November 2016 – October 2017

Well I’ve checked back and this is my 10th annual report for the Group. At least it’s given me the opportunity to start it off in a different way! Who knows if it’s my last.

Just the 2 big trips away this year ; to Shropshire over Easter and Hunstanton in September.

Easter was the big trip with 24 descending upon Shrewsbury for 4 days of walking including Wenlock Edge, Stiperstones ridge, The Long Mynd and The Wrekin. 36 miles in all with windy weather for much of the time turning wet on the last (Wrekin) day. Nevertheless a great time was had by all and Shrewsbury was a good base. Ian C has kindly contributed a more detailed article to be found on the website.

The Hunstanton (pirate) weekend was busy with 2 coastal walks and the annual crazy golf at the Blackbeard course. Walks were from Old Hunstanton and Cley-next-the-sea with a quick downpour on day 1 but glorious sunshine ending day 2 with tea and cake overlooking the Blakeney Marshes.

The usual fortnightly rota of Sunday walks featured locations as far apart as Saffron Walden (Essex), Lincolnshire Wolds, Sandy (Beds.) and Leicestershire but fair to say this year many were not too far away travel wise. Distances were from 6½ to 13 miles (are we going soft in our old age?)

The Summer evening walks were well attended and proved popular with some fine pub stops especially now The Fox at Folksworth has reopened.

Our esteemed Walks Organiser Paul advised at the AGM that we had 35 walks on our programme over the year.

On the social side we had a couple of new events. A Murder Mystery Evening (whodunit? I can’t remember but it was fun trying to find out) and a meal at a Turkish restaurant including belly dancing entertainment (and I’m not talking about the restaurant’s dancer). This was backed up with the annual croquet tournament with Mat and Niamh and the crazy golf competition with Ian C all winning for the first time. Other delights were another Escape Rooms escapade and the Christmas meal (2016) at The Bluebell in Glinton. We also said au revoir to Claire W and Mike with a meal, also at The Bluebell, as they went globetrotting (with some walking) for a year.

The year ended with the AGM and the 2nd holding of the PYW photo competition with Kate and Stephen being worthy winners and Debbie a slightly dodgy winner (Linda did the hard work) in the 3 categories.

2018 is here (as I type this) and the Easter trip to the Yorkshire Dales is all arranged with fingers already crossed for good weather. By coincidence we did the Herriot Way around the Yorkshire Dales 10 years ago!
