Peterborough Younger Walkers - Walks 2023

31st December - 2nd January 2023 - New Year away - Bewdley, Worcester.
Our New Year away this year will be centred at Bewdley, Worcestershire. Jane has kindly offered to lead walks on the above 3 days. Outlines are below although details may be tweaked between now and then. Bewdley is about 2 hours drive away and in an area we haven't walked before. There is a variety of accommodation in Bewdley and nearby Kidderminster (Premier Inn/Travelodge) although Bewdley options are reducing fast. If you are interested please arrange your own accommodation and let Stephen know you are joining us.

Saturday 31st - Kinver Edge, just north of Kidderminster.
A walk along the Edge and in surrounding countryside hopefully with opportunity to explore the cave at Nanny's Rock. Possible National Trust tearoom. Suggested start: 11am.

Sunday 1st - Bewdley
Walk from Bewdley along the Worcestershire Way returning via Wyre Forest - 8 miles? Possible stop at Wyre Forest tea rooms or pub.

Monday 2nd - Clent Hills
A short walk over the Clent Hills (10 miles east of Bewdley) and en-route home to Peterborough.

Sunday 15th January 2023 - Braunston-in-Rutland
Meet outside All Saints Church in Braunston-in-Rutland LE15 8QS, map/grid ref: 234/SK832066 at 10:30. A circular walk from Braunston-in-Rutland to Hebes Wood and return for possible refreshments at the Blue Ball pub.

Sunday 29th January 2023 - Marholm, Cambridgeshire
Meet outside the village hall on Castor Road in Marholm PE6 7JA ///eggs.nasal.things (parking sensibly along road), map/grid ref: 227/TF148021 at 10:30. A circular walk out around Castor Hanglands (not through so avoiding muddy/boggy bits) to Upton returning via Belsize Farm. Popping into Fitzwilliam Arms afterwards.

Sunday 12th February 2023 - Empingham, Rutland Water and Fort Henry
Meet outside the White Horse public house in Empingham LE15 8PS map/grid ref: 234/SK948085 at 10:30. Park sensibly in streets nearby. A circular walk from Empingham down to Rutland Water, across to Whitwell, then on to Exton and Fort Henry before returning to Empingham.

Sunday 26th February - Fotheringhay, Northants
Meet outside The Falcon Inn in Fotheringhay PE8 5HZ (parking sensibly along road) map/grid ref: 227/TL059932 at 10:30. This circular walk heads north to New Sulehay and then back via Woodnewton with the option to pop into The Falcon afterwards.

Sunday 12th March 2023 – Braunston-in-Rutland circuit via Launde Abbey
Meet at the church in Braunston, LE15 8QS, map/grid ref: 234/SK832066, ///spruced.snacking.tingled at 10:30. Park sensibly in the village. A circular walk from Braunston via Launde Abbey where we can hopefully stop for a cup of tea.

Sunday 26th March 2023 – Woolsthorpe by Belvoir
*UPDATED MEET POINT* Park and meet in the Woolsthorpe Village Hall car park in Main Street, Woolsthope by Belvoir, Grantham, NG32 1LT (///cheek.zaps.misty). map/grid ref: 247/SK837339 at 10:30. The walk begins along the towpath of a section of the Grantham Canal, continuing across fields until we reach the reservoir. From Denton we walk up to follow a disused railway track, briefly joining the Viking Way. The walk ends with views of Belvoir Castle, finishing at the Chequers Inn. A small table is booked for food afterwards which you may be able to join.

Easter 2023 - Ross on Wye - Friday 7th April to Monday 10th April

Friday 7th April - Goodrich Castle, Herefordshire. 11am
Meet at Goodrich Castle tea room (toilets etc) at 11am (NB this is outside the entrance to the castle), HR9 6HY map/grid ref: OL14/SO576197 What3words ///jugs.reshape.suckle Parking at Goodrich Castle is £3 all day and free for English Heritage members. Camper vans can be accommodated. A circular walk out along Coppet Hill ridge for fine views then down to the River Wye opposite Symonds Yat, turning east along the north bank of the river to Welsh Bicknor. Up onto the ridge behind the village then down to the Wye Valley Walk again to return north to Goodrich Castle via the village. Refreshments/toilets only at start and finish.

Saturday - Symonds Yat and the Wye valley from Lower Lydbrook, GL17 9NJ (9.25 miles)
Meet at the free car park at Lower Lydbrook for a 10:30 start. There are 2 fairly small parking areas and there is limited parking space around the village so car sharing is recommended where possible. We will head East along the Wye to Symonds Yat and head up to the view point for lunch (there are toilets and a cafe here).

Sunday - Forest of Dean from the Speech House car park, GL16 7EQ (10.7 miles)
10:30 start - the car park is free but isn't very big so car sharing and turning up in plenty of time is recommended. If it is full, the alternative is the sculpture park to the West (£7 for the day - cash/card/ringo). We will walk around the sculpture park and then loop round to Coalway for lunch where there is a pub option. There is potential for toilets / cafe at the sculpture park car park at the beginning and end.

Monday - Hangmans Hill from the British Camp car park, A449 - Malvern WR13 6DW (4.8 miles)
Meet at the car park on the A449 opposite the Malvern Hills Hotel for a 10:30 start. The website suggests it's £4.80 for the day and you can use cash or card. There are toilets, a cafe and a hotel at the car park. The walk goes south towards Hollybush and returns over the site of the old fort.

Sunday 23rd April 2023 – Huntingdon Circular, Joint Walk with Walk Cambridge
Meet at Huntingdon Bus Station (PE29 3PH) map/grid ref: 225/TL238716 around 10.30am. From Cambridge take the 9.25am Busway B service from Drummer Street bus station which arrives here at 10.36am. From Peterborough the train is a better option, take the 10.15am Kings Cross train which arrives at Huntingdon Railway Station at 10.29am. If driving, there is free parking at Mill Common Car Park (PE29 3AR). There are toilets at the train and bus stations.
We start near the town sign depicting its most famous citizen, Oliver Cromwell. We will then head towards the Chinese bridge in Godmanchester. From there, we cross a churchyard and reach Godmanchester Nature Reserve with lakes which are former gravel pits. We then walk through flood meadows next to the River Ouse until we reach Houghton Mill where we will have our lunch stop. There are some toilets here and a cafe and shop. After lunch we will pass the beautiful thatched cottages in the village, then walk on paths either side of the main road until we reach Hartford. From there, it's back to Huntingdon through the riverside park.
Some of the paths are very likely to be muddy. Walking boots are recommended. Wear suitable clothing for the weather on the day. Please bring a packed lunch and sufficient water for the whole walk. Dogs - assistance dogs only please

Sunday 7th May 2023 – Helpston via Castor Hanglands
Meet outside the Blue Bell public house in Helpston (PE6 7ED) map/grid ref: 235/TF121053 at 10:30. A circular walk from Helpston walking through the woods to Castor Hanglands, hopefully for a few late bluebells.

Sunday 21st May 2023 – Turvey, Bedfordshire
Meet near the church, next to the Three cranes pub, in Turvey on the A428 west of Bedford, MK43 8EJ. map/grid ref: 208/SP941524 at 10:30. There is a small village shop for supplies. Please park in the layby just outside of the village or if parking in the village please be considerate as space is tight. Walk out to Stevenham connecting to the Ouse, then onto Pavenham and across to Harold Odell country park where there is a cafe selling snacks and light bites etc. Lunch will likely be a little later, around 1pm. An easy walk back to Turvey after.
