Peterborough Younger Walkers - Walks 2022

PYW New Year Get Away - Matlock, Derbyshire
Please see below an outline of the walks we have planned for New Year. Obviously distances may be varied or start times changed dependent on the weather. Details on start points to follow.

Saturday 1st January
Start from Cromford Mill (toilets, cafe, parking) at 11am for an 8-10 mile walk south via River Derwent than along the High Peak Trail to Middleton Moor then back through Middleton.

Sunday 2nd January
Start from Matlock Station at 10.30am for an 8-10 mile walk north along River Derwent to Darley Bridge or Wensley then over Bonsall Moor to Bonsall then back via Limestone Way.

Monday 3rd January
Start from Matlock Bath Station at 10am for a 5 mile walk up to Starkholmes then along ridge via High Tor to Old Matlock crossing River Derwent to ascend Shining Cliff then along to Masson and down and back via Matlock Bath.

Sunday 16th January 2022 - Grafham Water Circuit
Meet at the Visitors Centre, Marlow Car Park, Grafham (PE28 0BH), map/grid ref: 225/TL167679 at 10:30. Parking charges apply. A walk around the lake stopping for refreshments in Perry before walking back along the dam and back to the visitors centre. Dogs allowed.

Sunday 30th January 2022 - Greetham, Rutland
Meet at the Greetham Community Centre (lots of parking) Great Lane, Greetham (LE15 7NG, fidgeting.radiates.ruin ) map/grid ref: 234/SK927148 at 10:30. A walk south along the Viking Way then east past Tunneley Wood to Fort Henry Lake for views returning via Greetham Golf Course to Greetham for refreshments.

Sunday 13th February 2022 - Creeton, Lincolnshire
Meet at the junction of B1176 and Caunthorpe Road, Creeton (NG33 4QB,victor.stunt.crash) map/grid ref: 248/TF011198 at 10:30. A circular walk looping north to Corby Glen (lunch stop with pub and cafe options) then back around to Creeton. Walk may be muddy in places so gaiters recommended.

Sunday 27th February 2022 - Uppingham
Meet at the Market Place in Uppingham (LE15 9QH) map/grid ref: 234/SP866996 at 10:30. A circular walk from Uppingham to Stoke Dry Church and then along to Eye Brook Reservoir and back to Uppingham via Stoke Dry Wood for refreshments.

Sunday 13th March 2022 - Manton, Rutland
Meet the Horse and Jockey pub in Manton (LE15 8SU) map/grid ref: 234/SK878045 at 10:30. Please park considerately in the village. Our route will take us along the western edge of Rutland Water to the visitor Centre, before heading inland over the hills (yes, little ones, but definitely hills) to Braunston. After a stop in the village, with time to visit the Blue Ball pub, or feed the ducks at the pond, we wander back along the valley to Manton.

Sunday 27th March 2022 - Barnwell Country Park, Oundle
Meet in the car park at Barnwell Country Park (PE8 5PB, charges apply) map/grid ref: 227/TL038871 at 10:30. A circular walk out to Oundle Marina and then on to Oundle via Ashton Lock, then follow the river to Cotterstock returning to Barnwell via a woodland walk. Refreshments available at Oundle Wharf, in Oundle and back at Barnwell Country Park.

Sunday 10th April 2022 - Greatford
Meet at the Hare and Hounds pub at Greatford (PE9 4QA, parking roadside on Main Street) map/grid ref: 234/TF088119 at 10:30. A circular walk from Greatford via Braceborough, Manthorpe, Toft, Witham on the Hill and Carlby. Lunch stop in Witham on the Hill at either the village green or pub in the village.

15-18 April 2022 - Easter in Jersey
Walks planned as follows but please note the order may be changed depending on weather/transport availability and there will be bus transport to start and finish on some days:

Friday 15th April - Devils Hole to St Ouens Bay.
A walk along the north-east coast ending along the beach at St Ouens (Watersplash Cafe). 8½ miles

Saturday 16th April - Gorey Pier to Bonne Nuit Bay.
Another lovely coast route via St Catherines. 10 miles

Sunday 17th April - St Aubin to Corbiere.
A coastal walk via St Brelades (lunch) 9½ miles

Monday 18th April - St Helier walk.
A circular walk from the capital taking in local landmarks. There may be a shorter 6 mile walk for those flying home that day and a longer 10 mile walk for those staying on..

Sunday 24th April 2022 - Lyddington, Rutland
Meet outside the Old White Hart pub at Lyddington (LE15 9LR fidgeting.radiates.ruin - parking roadside along Main Street) map/grid ref: 234/SP874971 at 10:30. Picking up the Rutland Round (a portend for later in the year) we walk east to Seaton over rolling rural Rutland then swing north via Bisbroke before turning towards Uppingham for our lunch stop (refreshments/toilets). We then head south to return to Lyddington where Sarah and I will continue to max out our English Heritage membership by visiting the Bede House (open until 5pm).

Wednesday 27th April 2022 - Sawtry Evening Walk
Meet in Saint Judith's Lane car park (PE28 5XE), near Saint Judith's Field, in Sawtry map/grid ref: 227/TL170828 at 19:00. We will walk up to Aversley wood where there will hopefully be swathes of bluebells. There should be plenty of photo opportunities.

Meet Meet at the Crown Inn at Elton (PE8 6RQ, parking around the green) map/grid ref: 227/TL086940 at 10:30. A circular walk from Elton via Nassington, Old Sulehay Forest and Yarwell Mill where toilets and refreshments will be available.

Wednesday 11th May 2022 - Barnack Evening Walk
Meet outside The Millstone public house in Barnack (PE9 3ET), map/grid ref: 234/TF076049 at 19:00. A circular walk along country tracks partly on the Topel Way to Ashton and Ufford then back into Barnack for refreshments.

Saturday 21st / Sunday 22nd May 2022 - Wanderlust Way, Lincolnshire
A two day walking weekend enjoying the 20 mile Wanderlust Way in the North Lincolnshire Wolds (10 miles each day). Final numbers now confirmed. Any enquiries please phone Stephen as below.

Sunday 5th June 2022 - Ailsworth and Castor Hanglands
Meet at Ailsworth Village Green, opposite Station Road (PE5 7AH), map/grid ref: 227/TL116987 at 10:30. A walk around the nature reserve walking from Ailsworth up country tracks up to a chapel and woodlands with a lunchstop at Willowbrook Farm where there is a cafe for refreshments and toilets. We will walk back through the woods and fields to return to Ailsworth.

Tuesday 14th June 2022 - Stilton Evening Walk
Meet by The Talbot Inn, Stilton (PE7 3RP), parking in street, map/grid ref: 227/TL163894 at 19:00 to be guided through the golf course towards Glatton deviating to Denton before sauntering back to Stilton for a tipple at The Talbot.

Sunday 19th June 2022 - Apethorpe, Northamptonshire
Meet at the Church in Apethorpe (PE8 5DG), map/grid ref: 234/TL023957 at 10:30. A circular walk heading north to Bedford Pulieus then onwards to King's Cliffe, with possible pub stop at the The Cross Keys, skirting Tomlin Wood and passing Apethorpe Hall on the return.

Sunday 14th August 2022 - Thrapston, Northamptonshire
Meet at the Sackville car park in Thrapston (free parking NN14 4PD, more available at Chancery Lane) map/grid ref: 224/SP997787 at 10:30. The walk heads out from Thrapston via Sudborough with a lunch stop at Wadenhoe. Toilets and shop at the start point

Sunday 11th September 2022 - Wansford
This is the Susan Keightley Memorial Walk.
Meet in front of The Haycock Hotel, Wansford (PE8 6JA), map/grid ref: 234/TL073991 at 10:30. Ample parking in the adjacent streets. This circular walk will head north over the historic Wansford Bridge, head west through Old Sulehay Forest, turn south at Old Sulehay Lodge down to Nassington, passing Elsie's Tea Room, Prebendal Manor. Head east over the meadow and River Nene to NVR Yarwell Jcn. Walk to NVR Wansford Station via New Lane. Follow the River Nene bank via Sutton back to the start point.

Sunday 25th September 2022 - Belton in Rutland
Meet St Peter's Church in Belton-In-Rutland (LE15 9JU) map/grid ref: 234/SK816013 at 10:30. This circular walk heads out from Belton in Rutland up to Leigh Lodge and along the River Chater picking up part of the Leicestershire Round going up to Withcote and down to Launde Abbey before heading back to Belton.

Sunday 23rd October 2022 - Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire
Meet at the small car park at the village crossroads of High Street and Church Lane in Sharnbrook (MK44 1PB), map/grid ref: 208/SP995596 at 10:30. The walk follows a section of the Ouse Way to Parvenham and onto the Harold-Odell country park for lunch where there is a visitor's centre with toilets and light refreshments then rejoin the Ouse Way to return to Sharnbrook.

Sunday 6th November 2022 - Burghley Estate
Meet in the main Burghley House car park off the Barnack Road B1443 south-east of Stamford map/grid ref: 234/TF050062 at 10:30. Burghley House is clearly signposted from the surrounding area. We will walk around the outskirts of Burghley Estate and out to Pilsgate and Barnack, mainly on good tracks and paths. There will be no pub stop en-route but there will be a cafe and toilets available at the end (and start!) of the walk.

Sunday 20th November 2022 - Kings Cliffe Walk
Meet by the Cross Keys public house (PE8 6XA) ///prone.tickling.works in Kings Cliffe, map/grid ref: 224/TL008972 at 10:30. We bimble over to Blatherwycke to enjoy a lovely view of the lake and a libation stop. A fair few footsteps to Fineshade and lunch stop at Top Lodge Visitor Centre (toilets). We then set off for a jaunt on the Jurassic Way followed by a stroll back to the start at Kings Cliffe. Remember all truly great thoughts are conceived by walking!

Friday 25th November - PYW AGM and Meal - Admiral Wells, Holme
You are invited to our AGM, meal and photo competition. This year we are in the function room at The Admiral Wells, Holme, PE7 3PH (just south of Yaxley). The format is to arrive 7-7.15 to order drinks then start the AGM at 7.30. Hopefully we'll conclude within the hour for dinner to be served at 8.30. After eating the photos will be voted on and winners announced. There will be a requirement to pre-order meals. We've dined several times and their portions are generous so if you might want pudding consider the smaller portion options on some choices.
Please let Stephen know soonest if you'd like to come along for our usual fayre of dining, minimal business and bonhomie including the annual photo competition.

Sunday 11th December 2022 - Castle Bytham Christmas Lunch Walk
Meet at the duck pond opposite the Castle Mound in Castle Gate, Castle Bytham. map/grid ref: 247 and 248/SK989186 at 10:30. There is ample parking around Castle Bytham, please park considerately. Proof that South Lincolnshire isn’t all flat! A circular walk starting in Castle Bytham, passing the former cricket ground (possibly one of the most scenic in Britain), Thunderbolt Pit, then a short section of road walking into the village of Little Bytham (some railway history), then following a permissive footpath along the West Glen river to Creeton, then back to Castle Bytham, via Lawn Wood.
All of those who are eating Christmas Lunch at The Castle Inn, make sure you get there by 13:00.

Sunday 18th December - Elton walk
Meet in the car park at Bosworth's Garden Centre, Elton (PE8 6SH) ///examiner.tango.spurted map/grid ref:224/TL090929 at 10.30am. We cross the A605 to enjoy the spinneys and vistas outside Warmington before descending to walk through the old part of the village before passing under the 605 on the Nene Way towards Fotheringhay for an early lunch stop before ambling on cross country over the Nene and back through Elton for festive refreshments in the Mulberry Cafe at the Garden Centre.

31st December - 2nd January 2023 - New Year away - Bewdley, Worcester.
Our New Year away this year will be centred at Bewdley, Worcestershire. Jane has kindly offered to lead walks on the above 3 days. Outlines are below although details may be tweaked between now and then. Bewdley is about 2 hours drive away and in an area we haven't walked before. There is a variety of accommodation in Bewdley and nearby Kidderminster (Premier Inn/Travelodge) although Bewdley options are reducing fast. If you are interested please arrange your own accommodation and let Stephen know you are joining us.

Saturday 31st - Kinver Edge, just north of Kidderminster.
A walk along the Edge and in surrounding countryside hopefully with opportunity to explore the cave at Nanny's Rock. Possible National Trust tearoom. Suggested start: 11am.

Sunday 1st - Bewdley
Walk from Bewdley along the Worcestershire Way returning via Wyre Forest - 8 miles? Possible stop at Wyre Forest tea rooms or pub.

Monday 2nd - Clent Hills
A short walk over the Clent Hills (10 miles east of Bewdley) and en-route home to Peterborough.
